The third COVID wave seems to recede in the country, as the daily cases plunging to a 34-day low and fatalities reported were the fewest in 15 days.

On Monday, India reported 66,028 fresh cases which were the lowest daily tally since January 4. Less than 1 lakh cases were recorded for two consecutive days. A decrease in fresh cases was mostly observed on Monday′s owing to lower testing and staff shortages over the weekend.

440 deaths were reported on Monday, not including the deaths from earlier periods added to the toll mainly by Kerala. This was the lowest toll reported in a day since January 23. Monday′s fatality figures are the first sharp drop in deaths during the third wave and the trend needs to be observed for the next few days.

On Monday, Kerala reported 127 deaths which included fatalities that occurred in the past few days but were not reported due to delays in paperwork. Additionally, 733 deaths from earlier periods were added to the toll as a part of reconciliation exercise following the Centre′s guidelines and orders from the Supreme Court.
